Exercise 9.2

Directed Shielding

Purpose

The purpose of this exercise is to explain how to shield from energies directed at you. Creating a directed shield is more challenging than a bubble shield. Do the exercise only if you actually are dealing with such energies and after having done Exercise 8, Basic Shielding a number of times. Read the entire exercise at least once to become familiar with each step in the process before you do it. Doing otherwise will hampers your efforts, as you cannot do the steps separately.

NOTE: Do NOT try to do this shield without have done the previous Basic Energy Shielding exercise and having read this exercise in its entirety.

Background:

In the first method we looked at how to create and hold a simple bubble shield, which is helpful when one has to create some shielding on the fly. The elements of the process are essentially the same for that and this exercise. The major differences are in the level of detail and the skill required. Guarding ourselves against casual influences is not that hard; however, it becomes more challenging when we are dealing strong directed energies, ones likely to persist.

When creating a directed shield your intent becomes one of the most important factors. It must be clear and strong. The important points when creating a bubble shield remain relevant with this one. They are included below along with additional points so they are fresh in your mind.

  • We must be awareness of the potential dynamics of the energy we want to shield ourselves from or block.
  • Influences associated with the energy (includes our own thoughts about it).
  • Our thoughts in the relation to the of the energy and/or its source.
  • Our own state of mind and our energy at the time we create the shield.
  • Perception of the dynamics of the directed energy.
  • Perception of the dynamics of your energy.

The essay looked at three different ways of creating shields, these being psychological, non-rational or psychic shields and mental blocks and filters. Blocks and filters, as explained in the essay, do not act as shields for they only restrict our awareness of the energy and not the energy itself.

Shielding ourselves from the energy of others should rarely be required. It is not that common for people to have the awareness, focus and power to project any significant amount of energy at another. We must be sure that someone is doing so before constructing a shield as often it is not directed energy from them that is making us uncomfortable, it is our own feelings about them or simply our reactions to our current experiences. We may believe someone is directing energy but our reactions could be the result of past interactions with them, our perception of how they are looking at us, our stereotyping of aspects of them or for other reasons. As a result we could be manifesting the vary energies we believe are coming from them. To shield against imagined energy is to lock yourself in with your own issues.

The imaginary energies I refer to are thoughts we have created or existing ones we have reinforced. Consider the idea of shielding yourself from certain aspects of your own thoughts; this can be harmful. As a result, I am including some techniques to validate the energy source as part of the exercise. This is not an issue when one is using a bubble shield against general influences as in such a case we are not targeting a specific energy.

Do take shielding with an appropriate measure of seriousness and caution as was suggested in the Basic Shielding exercise. Another caution to remember when you build a shield is to take it down when the influence has ended or you have grown past the need to shield from it.

Method

Basic Directed Shield

When one thinks about creating a more focus shield, the first and foremost thought one should have is “why do I believe I need to create a shield?” To know this one must ask other questions, these being “is what I perceive accurate?” and “is the source external?”, and “is this shield necessary?” One does not start building shields casually. A focused thought construct such as a shield can cause us problems if ill conceived or improperly constructed. We will cover these questions and more in the first four steps. Do not start to create a shield, covered in Step 5, until you have objectively determined that the answer in all three cases is yes.

Of course, determining the answers is also problematic. Clarity and sensitivity are always a challenge when dealing with energy. I have spoken about the need to identify that we are the target of directed external energies before actually constructing a shield. In particular, we must be able to:

  • Determine we are subject to directed energy (from the myriad of vibrations we are subject to).
  • Determine the nature and source of the energy.
  • Determine the impact of the energy on us.

With sufficient experience, one can answer some or all of these questions without meditation. I will add that as one builds experience in shielding they will also find that their need to do so decreases. This is because increased awareness of energy leads to better “management” of one’s own energy field and to growth that, in turn, lessens the need for protection.

Step 1: Getting into the right posture

1. Start this exercise by getting into a meditative posture. You should be familiar with how to do this and comfortable doing so. I strongly recommend you wait to try shielding until you are both familiar and comfortable with meditation. In addition, this is not a short exercise, certainly not the first few times you do it. You will need to remain in meditation for the full duration of the process.

2. Once in a meditative posture it is time to be grounded, clear and centered. This is very important as you will be working directly with energy and in doing so can be vulnerable to the very influences you wish to block. It also affects your ability to manifest the correct shield to deal with the influence.

a) Grounding: It is necessary to ground to protect yourself against any strong energy encountered during this process.

b) Clearing: Our energy can affect our clarity; hence, we need to make sure that we do not have other energies affecting us.

c) Centering: When we create a shield, we want to be certain we are doing so for the “right” reasons. Only when centered can we be reasonably we can distinguish our energy from external sources; otherwise, we can end up building shields based on our reactions. It could also result in a shield that goes far beyond what we need, that does not block the energy or one is ineffective.

Step 2: Determining if energy is directed at you

1. Our next step, once we are in the correct “state of mind”, is to determine if we are subject to directed energy. To do this we focus attention on our energy so we know it without thinking about it. This becomes easier the more centered we are. Start this by visualizing your aura either from the first person or from outside looking in. Feel your energy rather than think about it. Strengthen your awareness of your energy by allowing what you feel to be all you perceive at this point. Be careful to ensure you are feeling just your energy and exclude energies that are not “yours”.

2. Contemplate the outer edge of your aura and use awareness of your Rational Mind Editor as you try to sense whether you are being subject to directed energy. I find it handy to phrase this as a question to myself. It is critical that you know this is occurring rather than think that is the case. You will also need this awareness to perceive the energy you choose to block and manifest the appropriate shielding energy. Continue to the next step even if you are unable to determine with surety that you are subject to energy as this awareness may come in one of the next steps.

Step 3: Determining the nature and source of the energy

1. When we are trying to get a feel for energy, the tendency is to think about what it feels like and react from an emotional perspective rather than just being aware of it. We want to know the energy, not judge it or have a discussion with ourselves about it. Perception of the energy is sufficient. You want to make sure you are sensing all aspects of it as well as energy can move in very subtle ways.

Release control of your awareness to your feelings, and resist the urge to think your way through this. Allow yourself to take in what you notice as you gaze around you aura or feel it out with visualized hands. Look for any energy that is not yours. Do not perceive of it coming at you in any particular way at all. It could come from any or all directions including above and below you. It also can manifest only when it encounters your energy, come as a mist, have bunches of little probes or appear some other way. The method is entirely dependent on the person directing the energy. Note that these are figurative descriptions as our minds translates what it perceives into impressions more than images, though you may get these as well. Be sure to have, in your mind’s eye, scanned all around your energy field and follow any intuitive notions you have about the nature of the energy.

2. Fine-tune your feel of the energy by shifting your awareness and in all ways that you can around it similar to how one tunes a car radio. We do this so we can isolate the energy from all other external energies. It is rare that energy directed at us is just of one type or “frequency”. If we do not isolate the energy with our awareness, we potentially end up missing some or blocking other energies of a similar type, some of which may be ours. I cannot easily explain this process; all I can do is suggest that you feel the energy, and then all around it.

Only continue this exercise if you are able to isolate the energy. If you are not able to do so, you should work on are grounding, clearing and centering in meditation followed by deeper meditations to quiet the mind.

3. If you have isolated the energy, you can now track it back to its source thought this is not necessary nor is it required to shield the energy. If you choose to do so, ensure you have a good reason, one that is not ego based. You may think that this will help you figure out the energy better, it will not. Try to make no presumptions about the source of the energy and do not think about it. If you do, you may have made an accurate determination far more difficult. If you still choose to locate the source continue below, otherwise go to Step 4.

4. To locate the source you must have isolated the energy. When you do try to locate the source be very mindful of any preconceived notions you may have about the source. First, contemplate the energy and allow the energy itself to speak to you. You do not need to track back along the energy flow, as the source is inherent in the energy itself.

Focus your active thoughts on the energy (ideally you should have very few active thoughts) so that, in a sense, you become one with it. Now, introduce the idea of “source” (in relation to the energy) into your awareness. You need not go beyond this. If an impression does not surface in your mind, do not press for one as this indicates a need to know and this is a thought can affect the shield you are constructing. An inkling as to the source is insufficient as this would be a thought based answer and the mind is inclined to believe this even if it is inaccurate. I recommend against following back along energy itself to the source as we can shield against it without knowing the source. If you do not get an impression, simply continue on to Step 4.

5. Our reaction to knowledge of the source limits our ability to benefit from the knowing. The only value that knowing the source has is it can help us further isolate the energies we want to block and it is only useful if we do not react to the thoughts about either the energy or its source. If we can be unconditional, it can be help us manifest a more effective shield as we would get a more accurate impression of the energy and are less likely to block other possibly beneficial energies from the person. This can be true for people we are close to and with whom we have an overall positive relationship. Most people are not aware that their thoughts are actually actions and simply let them go. They may well be completely unaware they are directing negative or harmful energy at you. As a result, be careful to not let your awareness of their issues affect what you think or feel about them.

Step 4: Determining the impact of the energy on us

1. The last step before we manifest a shield is to consider whether the energy we are experiencing is actually harmful to us. Unfamiliar energies can make us uncomfortable, that does not mean they are an issue. Nevertheless, we still may go ahead and manifest a shield. The important point to consider is if it is not harmful then we should consider whether shielding is even necessary. For instance, if we tend to be a negative person we may perceive someone’s positive energy as a problem. We should also avoid building shields to block influences from which we should be learning. The question you ask is whether the energy in your best interests or not.

2. If you are at all uncertain about the impact of the energy on you, use your developing honesty and awareness of your Rational Mind Editor as you ask yourself the question in the previous step. You do this by feeling the way the incoming energy and your own mix. Allow the feeling to be there and at the same time try to identify what the resulting energy is. What does it trigger in you?

Identify your response to the energy if possible. It is important because it could affect your ability to confident in your shield, which relates to how effective it is. In addition, it also shows you what issue you need to work on. Our lives are about learning. If we block the influences we need to learn from, we can be causing ourselves more challenges for ourselves. Be very certain that shielding is necessary and that it is the right choice for you before continuing with this exercise. If, after trying to discern the impact of the energy, you are still unsure, just be mindful of this. Now continue to Step 5.

Step 5: Building the shield

1. At this point, you should have direct knowledge of the type of energy you plan to shield from yourself. To manifest an effective shield we must learn more about the energy we are intent on blocking as the energy has not just its own frequency per say, it also has its own particular way of moving and affecting us. Energy can come at us directly, it can hover around us and press on us, it can be mist-like whereby it gradually works its way into our aura or it can be swirling around us looking for openings. It can be like a sound, or a wave of energy and it can trigger us to experience a range of emotions. I spoke about this in the essay “Energy Linkages” and you must consider this when you construct your shield.

2. The temperament and nature of the person sending the energy determines its movement and type. Focus your attention on the energy you intend to shield yourself from and then start to imagine or visualize it. Imagine this in three dimensions as the energy may be all around you and your shield must be all around you. Once you have started this, add in a visualization of your energy shield and observe or feel them interact. You want to make sure that whatever you manifest will block it and now permit to find a way around your shield.

For example, if energy is coming as a wave of vibration and we manifest a shield in the form of a solid wall it may not hold. The reason is solid, in our minds, means physically solid and there are gaps in physical objects. Our minds will create a shield based on our thoughts; therefore, our shield will contain gaps as well since the mind will create a shield based on this image. The majority of people have not yet incorporated the fact that everything is merely energy in relationships. This is more in line with the quantum view of reality. Be mindful, as you visualize and later empower the shield that the energy you seek to block will easily find its way past this limitation.

To resolve the challenge in the example above, you could block such energy by imagining a barrier that is complete bubble or wall of energy. The form is a matter of personal creativity. Make sure whatever you visualize that you have confidence in it, less than strong or full confidence will severely weaken the shield. You should also be listening to your intuition as you build it. We do know what we need to do and thinking about it is not always the best way to go.

3. Keep emotional reactions to a minimum and visualization of the shield energy you plan to use firmly in mind. Always have the highest good of all in mind and do not use negative energies of any kind in shielding. You want to be acting with love and compassion not anger or hurt.

Focus most of your attention on the shield you intent to manifest and part on what you are shielding from yourself. The last step is to empower the shield. Your thoughts, if focused enough, will have created the form of the shield, your will is what fills it. See or feel your shield as vibrant, powerful and impenetrable by the energy you are shielding from yourself. It will only hold if you believe it will. Make that image of it being impenetrable all you perceive, see the directed energy as stopped by your shield.

Using ones will to empower a shield is another aspect of working with energy that is impossible to explain. Either you get it or you do not. If you are successful, and you think about the energy, it should no longer be of concern to you. You should be able to imagine the energy coming at you from all directions and that it is having no affect on you whatsoever and feel it. If your confidence wavers repeat Step 5.

Step 6: Finishing up

1. The last step of this process is fine-tuning the shield. Remain in your meditative posture until you have completed this step.

2. Among the thought forms used to manifest your shield should one that includes the idea that it is not permanently. Its purpose is to block what you are unable to block now, and not to avoid the lesson associated with why you cannot. If this is the case, it is highly likely the shield will eventually fail.

Imagine the shield being around as long as needed, and be clear in your definition of that need. This is a good opportunity to perceive that you will eventually be immune to this particular energy and that it passes right through you and does not affect you in any way.

3. Next up is to examine the way the incoming energy reacts after encountering our shield. I see the energy neutralized when it encounters my shield, this way it will not affect anyone else, including the source. Anyone who directs energy at another must learn their own lessons. If we reflect it back at them, we are simply doing as they are. You are not helping them by doing so; you are only setting up tough lessons for yourself. This is not the path of those seeking to grow. Further, we could be alerting them to our actions. This could result in their changing tactics with the result being your shield will cease to be effective.

4. The last step in the process is to imagine into the future. Visualize that it is later in the day, then two days from now and finally a time near the limit you set on the shield. In each image, examine what you feel from the visualization so that you know your shield remains intact and effective. If needed, further empower the shield as you did earlier.

5. At this point, all we need to do is return to waking consciousness or if we feel so inclined, go on to other energy work. If you done meditating, return to waking consciousness as you would any other time. Do not rush this part of the exercise. You have done a great deal of “work” in this exercise and so your exit should be slow and relaxed.

You can meditate on your shield or simply pause and feel it from time to time to make sure it is still intact and working. If you have doubts, you may need to reinforce it by repeating this exercise again.

Follow-up

I will not go over, in detail, what I have written on many times. We should not be using shields to avoid life issues. Energy can only affect us if we allow it. Most people are completely unaware of how vulnerable they are to energy directed at them and often have feelings that are not their own. You can see this dynamic when people are in groups and one person can affect everyone.

A basic bubble shield would be of great help in these circumstances as it is easy to put up; however, when someone is directing energy at us we may need a stronger defense. It is not likely a simple bubble shield will hold against a determined bully or someone with more awareness than control over their actions.

There are also risks that the sender of the energy may sense something, thought they probably could not articulate it and react unpredictably. This is common with people who have strong control issues. If you are shielding against energy sent by someone you know be aware of this. You may find it necessary to pay attention to their energy and actions when around you.

Some of the thoughts in the essay on shielding are worth repeating:

  • Do not block yourself off too much. While a shield may block out the influences we want, it may also block other energy flows we need.
  • Be very careful of the kinds of shields you build and remember you built them.
  • A good visualization helps in creating a strong shield.
  • Ask your guides or your inner self for the appropriate energy and use what you feel has been suggested.
  • Be careful not to cut yourself off from positive influences especially from any of the natural life energies that flow into us. These are not damaging, they are essential to our vitality and health.
  • Do not use shielding as a way to avoid growth if at all possible, lessons we try to avoid often come back with more severe ramifications.

I hope I have shared enough ideas to give you a better understanding of the dynamic, conscious universe in which we find ourselves. Everything in nature reacts to energy, though we are predominantly concerned with the reactions of other people to our energy. Generally, this reaction is one they are not conscious of making though they may be conscious of the feelings and thoughts that come from that reaction. This plays a significant role in stereotypical reactions that affects how they “take us”. Therefore, our state of mind, the types of thoughts we have and our feelings, affects our energy, which in turn affects the way others perceive and react to us.

This is not to say people are never deliberate in their attacks, as this does occur. Nonetheless, we can change the nature of the reactions others have to us by being conscious of our energy and keeping it neutral and balanced. This decreases the likelihood of others reacting in a negative way and is a powerful alternative to shielding. To do this one must begin to become more aware of their reactions to experiences as they happen. This takes time and patience and even with this occurs, there will be people who react negatively to and direct those kinds of energies at us. In such cases, shielding is always an option and one that can protect you as you work on growing and developing your own awareness.
