In early June 2015, when I was playing drums in The Marshall Lawrence Band, I had the good fortune to play them on Marshall's fifth album. Earlier in that year he began getting serious about doing the album. He already had an idea of what studio he would use to record it. Marshall had plenty of experience and connections to do it; however, I spoke to him about a friend of mine named Cam MacLeod.
Cam had many years of extensive experience in all aspects of recording having done his own albums and worked with major artists and recording professionals doing recording, mixing, engineering and producing and so on. I explained this to Marshall and also that he had built a top notch recording studio with all the expertise and services a band needs to put out a high quality album. I got the chance to introduce Marshall to Cam at a jam in north Edmonton.
I've known Cam since the early '80's when I auditioned to play in a band he was putting together. It was my first "real band" and while we had some rehearsals due to circumstances we never played live. Be that as it may, Cam and I have been friends ever since. I already knew he was a great guitar player and incredible singer but it wasn't until afterward that I found out how well known and respected he was and the depth of his expertise in the music industry.
In the years after we stayed in touch and in the early 90's I worked with him to write the lyrics for an album based on a song he'd written titled "What The War Will Bring". I spoke with Cam about Marshall wanting to record an album and brought Marshall to meet him at a music jam he was attending. I still remember the first words he said to Marshall when I introduced them... "You're a living legend, it's a pleasure to meet you sir."
Marshall had time to talk with Cam that night and it wasn't long before he decided to do his album at his Wolf Den Studio here in Edmonton. This gave me the chance to finally go into the studio to record the drums parts for an album. Before going in we went through the songs to be recorded in Marshall's home studio. We didn't have the opportunity to do pre-production work so I worked out the drum parts and finalized them with Marshall. This was an important step as what I did needed to fit in with his vision for his material. The mantra was keep it simple and let music speak for itself.
I did my part in the studio over two days followed by Zachery Robertson who went in to lay down the bass. After that it was Marshall, Cam MacLeod and his teams turn. They put a lot of work into recording the other instruments and vocals over the months that followed along with all the other work that needed to be done. The result of these efforts was a fine album titled Feeling Fine. Below you will find links to the songs, which are on Marshall's YouTube channel (if you have the time enjoy some of his other videos while you are there).
