Exercise 9.1
Basic Shielding: The Bubble Shield
Purpose
The purpose of this exercise is to explain how we shield ourselves from the energies of others or places when those energies are “negative” or troublesome. The exercise is more challenging than it appears as developing the skills to recognize the need for and how to create an effective shield takes time.
The skills I refer to are the ability to attain a high enough degree of attention or focus, to tune out other thoughts and sensitivity to energy so one can perceive them and manifest blocking energies. Further, these skills, as with many of the skills explored throughout the material, are difficult to develop if one’s beliefs do not allow it. Nor are these skills where the outcome is easily discernable so one should not necessarily expect results quickly. Perseverance and patience is required.
The method we will look at here is creating and holding a simple bubble shield, which is helpful when one has to create a general shield quickly or while on the go. The other shielding exercise (though there may be more than one) has you working on creating a longer-term shield against a particular influence. This exercise will get you acquainted the common principles of shielding.
A bubble shield is one that you can manifest for general protection of your energy. It is more of a casual shield and not one for dealing with situations where the energy is strong, directed at you and is likely to persist even if the source is not present. You can enhance a bubble shield using techniques included in subsequent shielding exercises and likely will do so if you become proficient at working with energy. There are reasons one might want to do so such as when you go to a busy mall, event, at parties or when out and about.

Background
You should have read and become familiar with material in the essays and exercises on meditation, grounding, clearing and shielding before attempting to do any shielding. Manifesting or creating an effective shield is not something one should do casually, even a bubble shield. Unless you are experienced, it is unlikely you will create a bubble or a more involved shield by simply thinking a little about it. The range of energies that we interact with is virtually inexhaustible, so without clear intent it is unlikely that we will be able to block any particular vibration effectively. One could just make a big wall; however, this would also block out beneficial energies and lock you in with your own.
Clear intent is a requirement for creating a shield of any kind. Nothing renders a shield ineffective more than lack of a clear intent. There are other reasons; however, we will get to them in due course. Besides our intent, as covered in the essay on Shielding, the important points to remember are:
- We must be awareness of the potential dynamics of the energy we want to shield ourselves from or block.
- Influences associated with the energy (includes our own thoughts about it)
- Our thoughts in the relation to the of the energy and/or its source
- Our own state of mind and our energy at the time we create the shield
The essay looked at three different ways of creating shields, these being psychological, non-rational or psychic shields and mental blocks and filters. Blocks and filters, as explained in the essay, do not act as shields for they only restrict our awareness of the energy with which we interact and not the energy itself. A bubble shield is a combination of the psychological and thee non-rational shield or what we will be calling a directed shield. By this, I mean that we think about the shield and that manifests energies that we use to create the bubble.
In general, we do not consider our energy field or aura. This puts it somewhat at the mercy of the forces around us. Energy follows attention, as a result a firmer notion about our aura along with efforts to ensure it remains intact, makes us less vulnerable to outside influences. Shielding ourselves from the energy of others should rarely be required, though protecting our energy is. We must be careful that we are using only the shielding that is necessary as too much shielding can cause problems.
We also want to be careful not to shield ourselves from energy we imagine, that is our own thoughts we have created or existing ones we have reinforced. Consider the idea of shielding yourself from certain aspects of your own thoughts; this can be harmful. As a result, I am including some techniques to validate the energy source as part of the exercise. This is not generally an issue when one is bubbling against general influences as in such a case we are not targeting a specific energy, it is more like an umbrella against the rain.
Do take shielding with an appropriate measure of caution and seriousness. It is very easy for our reactionary rational mind to steer us wrong, especially when we are feeling strong energies regardless of the source. We are not in any danger though we could allow the energies we perceive to affect us. They will do this if we share a commonality with the energy as this can cause those elements in our energy will resonate with it. We looked at this same mechanism in the essay on energy linkages.
When we manifest anything, even a shield, ones intent must be clear. Lack of clarity will reduce its effectiveness. We must be clear about which energies we are shielding ourselves from and we must be aware of what can keep us from focusing our attention. What can keep us from doing so?
Besides a busy overactive mind, we need to remember that the reason we are shielding against a particular influence is we react to some aspect of it. Without this, there would be no need for a shield. This means we are “vulnerable” to this particular energy or the group of energies directed our way. Recognizing ones vulnerability is important in creating an effect shield as we can factor that into our preparations.
The last point of note is to make sure that when you build your shield you remember to take it down. We looked at this in the essay, so you should understand why. You can leave a shield up for as long as you feel necessary, though one should avoid becoming dependent on it, except under extreme conditions.
Method
Have you ever gone into the mall, a party or anywhere where we are likely to interact closely with a large number of people, especially ones we do not know, and afterwards felt completely drained after? Even when there was no real reason to feel so drained? Alternatively, perhaps you have been in a room where everyone is agitated and you find yourself feeling agitated as well?
We can deal with both of these with relative ease. In such situations, they are not directing energy at us in particular; hence, we do not need a directed shield to block them. We can simple work with the edge of our energy field to keep the energies away from us. While such shields are relatively easy to create, in doing so we develop the skills to create stronger, directed shields. The common name of these simple shields is “bubble shield”.
The whole idea behind a shield is conceptually similar to the shields of a space ship in a science fiction novel. Like them, shields are created to block certain energies, or in the case of the novels, certain energies in space or weapons. For general influences, one can use a bubble shield, for energy that directed at us like a weapon, we would need a directed shield.
For instance, a space ship must have shielding against certain high-energy particles else, the people inside will be harmed. This is similar to why we would create a bubble shield, to block out general influences and to keep our energy intact. We will deal with the directed shielding next.
We look at two situations where one would create a bubble shield, one to keep their energy intact in a mall or when attending busy event, the other for situations where we must deal with strong energies and may not be able to leave. In both types of situations, the first step to calm you mind and yourself. For those new to energy awareness, the challenge is to trust yourself and rather than your thinking mind. That stated, I believe that after having creating a few bubble shields successfully using meditation you will be able to create them on the fly as needed without it.
You may notice a similarity between the psychological shield described in the essay and the bubble shield. They have a similar basis, in that we are using our thoughts to a certain extent, the difference is in the intent and focus of our thoughts.
Bubbling before going to the mall or an event
Step 1: Get into a meditative posture
Find a spot to sit quietly for a few minutes. It does not have to be your regular meditation spot, anywhere where you can sit undisturbed will do. When you are still start to breathe as you would during a meditation, though we need not get deep for this we still want to be nicely relaxed. When you feel you have achieved some measure of clarity and balance continue with the next step.
Step 2: Visualize or feel the influence you are trying to block
Once you are in a good spot focus your attention on the influence from which you wish to shield yourself. The key here is that your thoughts must have a correlation with the energies you seek to shield from, the stronger the correlation the more effective the shield. In the case of going into a busy mall, visualize yourself and your aura moving through the mall (the details of the building do not matter).
Now add other people in, including their auras and image that they bump into you as you walk around the mall. Visualize the interaction like two clouds meeting. This is not as easy as it sounds, that is if you are truly imagining the interaction as though it were real. This is a requirement for an effective bubble shield just as it is for any energy work.
Energy follows attention/intent, and it needs to be clear, hence, the more “real” your imaginings are the better. In this case do not focus on a particular energy; this will not work, as you do not know what energies you will encounter. Instead, you should imagine this energy as any kind of energy from people that is not your own or of which you are not currently allowing. Think of what that feels like rather than trying to “think” about it. In your imagining, you feel yourself and then have the root thought that I am bubbling against anything that is not me. I cannot explain it to you in any more detail; this is something you come to know for yourself.
Include in your visualize some of their energy mixing with yours and vice versa and that both of you will walk away with some of the others energy and “less” of your own. This is what we want to prevent. When you have visualized of this continue to the next step.
Step 3: Imagine a bubble around you
To prevent or certainly lessen the mixing and loss of our energy first image that you and your aura are inside a bubble. As in the previous step, visualization is the key. The bubble is a figurative description; everyone has their own form. We are really talking about the constituency of the outer edge of our aura as opposed to a literal bubble. The closer your visualization or imagining is to the kinds of interactions you seek to deflect the better.
You must imagine that what you are visualizing is real, for without this you have not firmed up the image. It is important to note that you are not creating a shield in a particular place at some time in the future. The visualization serves the purpose of preparing your mind to do as you are instructing. The firmer your mental image is the clearer the instructions to your mind. This is what determines the effectiveness of this simple shield.
What I do personally depends on my state of mind. During times when I have a lot on the go and my focus is lower I start by feeling me, know what my energy is like. I then picture my aura around me and associate that feeling that is “me” with that image. I visualize other people and their energy field as I did with my own with their having energy fields consisting of what is “not me”. By “not me”, I mean all other energies that I do not want, negative, lower vibration energy of any kind. When you do this, firm up these images so that they are as “real” as you can imagine.
Making this visualization a representation of us can be challenging. Focus your attention on your visualization and then extend it so that you see these people bumping into you and brushing against you. In this part, imagine their energy deflected off your bubble, though not back at the person, just away from you. You may have to think about the surface of your shield and consider whether it is solid enough. Some image a hard bubble around them, others use the image of a space ship shield as seen in the movies. You must have confidence in whatever image you use. See your energy as being resilient; visualize their energy deflected around you and that your aura remains intact.
When you do create your bubble shield do not imagine people as having different energies; this is too distracting. Instead, imagine each as having all a little bit of every type of energy that is not “you”, or that you want to block out so that you do not have to imagine all the possible variations. Do not concern yourself with how it works; remember that energy follows attention, which is "powered" by intent.
Attention can be directed through the mind in the form of thoughts/words or directly by intent (this is far more powerful a way to do it; however, in order to use intent alone we must have developed the ability to be consciously aware without using the mind and the thoughts within it, which is beyond the scope of this exercise. Our thoughts whether in words or through intent (without thoughts) empowers the energy. Empowered energy can only "act" based on thoughts or intent that gave rise to it. What you want to be doing is focusing on your visualizations being as real as you can make them as this will help you direct your intent with greater power.
At this point, you should have a good visualization of your bubble. Now, if you imagine interactions with people with enough clarity you should feel if your bubble works, that is it deflects their energy. Focus your attention on the interaction of your bubble and others. It may not seem like it makes a difference, it does. See their auras and your bubble interact and as you visualize imagine that this is happening in the future, when you go to the mall or to the event.
During your visualization of the interactions pay attention to whether your bubble is holding. If you notice or feel that that your bubble will not be effective refocus your thoughts around it being impervious to their energy. Do not just see it, feel it and know it. By doing this, you should sense if it would be effective and work as you intend. My rule of thumb is if I do not “know” for sure, that is I do not feel positive without hesitation that it is solid then it likely is not. Sensing the answer to this question is not different from what we looked at in terms of our honesty and Rational Mind Editor in Exercise 2. We will look at how to improve our bubble shield as part of the next step.
Step 4: Strengthen the Bubble
If this is one of your first attempts at bubble shielding, it is not likely you believe or feel it will be effective the first time. This is typical for most people as the notion of shielding others out is likely quite new and few have any experience working with the energy directly. It does not mean you were not successful as it can also mean you simply do not know for sure if it is. Unless you are very confident in the bubble shield it is likely you got a “no” to the question asked in the last step. This is natural; do not let it deter you. We want to strengthen our “bubble” and if you have done the previous steps, you will have manifested some changes in your energy.
To get better at working with energy, in this case building a bubble shield, there are two areas we look to improve on. One is our intentions whether it is "framed" by our thoughts or used directly. The other is how attentive and focused we are. We increase our focus by keeping our thoughts and intent on the matter at hand (creating the shield) and letting go of all other thoughts. The more we are able to do both the stronger our shield will be. I recommend looking at intent first as lack of firm intent will also affect our ability to focus our attention.
In terms of intent, consider what you want to block out and then use your imagination and visualization to examine what thoughts you used to create your bubble shield. The likely culprits for a lack of intent are uncertainty about the bubble shield and distracting thoughts. What you do is get a feel for the energy of your shield and at the same time consider your thoughts and intent. Does the bubble you created have the same feel as your intent? I cannot tell you how to get the answer to this question; you must feel it.
If your shield is ineffective the main factors that lead to it are:
- Unrelated thoughts that are distracting me and taking away your attention and focus.
- Intent being in conflict with our thoughts (generally the result of not knowing ourselves well enough to be aware of our "core intentions").
- Lack of clarity on the kind of shield you would like to construct.
- Thoughts that lead to resistance to the notion of shielding such not really believing in "energy" or that it is possible to shield out energies.
- Doubt or concerns about being able to actually create a shield.
We remove distracting thoughts during our meditations by working through those that we notice and letting them go. We go through the same process to deal with thoughts related to our intent, which in turn affect it. Examples would be thoughts such as “I am not sure if it will work”, “am I putting together the right energies?”, “have I exempted any energies that I shouldn’t have?” or “will this close me in?” These thoughts will affect whether you are able to articulate your intent well enough to your mind for it to be “solid”.
There is no quick fix to improving our attention; it is a gradual process. We do as we did when firming up our intent; we look for distracting thoughts. Surety and self-confidence play a role in this. If you are focusing as much as you can it will have to do for the moment. The effectiveness is dependent on your belief about your ability to create it. Let any thoughts of doubt go and remain focused on the image in your mind.
Step 5: Carry about your business
Now that you have constructed the bubble shield, carry on as you normally would. From time to time, consider your shield to make sure it is still in place. It should only take a moment, though you will need to be undistracted when you do so. I just pause, think about my energy and if uncertain I, in a sense, ask myself whether it is still in place. If not I refocus my thoughts as I walk or stop for a moment to compose my thoughts and briefly go through the same steps as above.
Follow-up
A bubble shield is useful so long as one does not rely on it. After you have done it a few times and have become very familiar with the process, you will realize one can simply think bubble and in a few seconds, block the energy. You could be in a restaurant having dinner and someone can start to stare and perhaps direct energy at you, for whatever reason. If you can calm your mind enough and keep from reacting, you can create a bubble around yourself or the booth you are sitting in. Arguably, this requires some degree of control; however, it is can be done. It all depends on how quickly you can focus your attention. Just be sure to follow all the steps, there is a reason for them.
In general, I see my energy as intact, balanced and fully connected to me. I have a firm and permanent visualization of myself this way, so unless I am very distracted I do not shield myself. Under normal circumstances, the energy of others can mix with mine but it does not dilute mine, and when they leave, what is not for me goes with them. Ideally, one should never need to bubble themselves. A firm, accurate image of oneself is a shield in itself. As you begin to become more confident in your abilities and start to know whom you are, you will not need to create a bubble shield except in rare circumstances.
