The Journey
An Introduction to the Material
Our modern times are not as different from the past as you may believe. Even with the vast advancements in technology, we are still creatures of flesh, of feelings, and of mind. We are still learning the same lessons we have always needed to learn. For all of our toys and creature comforts we still face fears, desires, hopes, expectations, get angry, have doubts and pain just as as we have curiosity, joys and other "pleasures". This continues to be the case though there has never been so much information available to learn from and that can help us along the way.
Online resources from modern psychological guides, old wisdom and new age ideas as well as countless self-help and development guides are readily available today. You can even find many older esoteric books and manuscripts that were not available to the public at large until recently.
The challenge one faces today is not a lack of information; it is discerning what is “True”, what is of value to us for growth and in learning how to use it in a practical way that helps us in life and enhances our growth. There are a number of reason why it's a challenge including the variety of terms used, vague and even changing definitions of terms and conflicting views and perspectives. The consequence of this is that while we can access and acquire a great deal of knowledge by reading from the plethora of sources understanding is far more elusive.
"Knowledge is a key ... understanding is found by going through the door it opens."
Our personal and spiritual growth is a journey, one where there's no surefire step by step guides to follow that will work for everyone. The two main reasons for this is we are all unique as our our lives and circumstances. Working on ourselves is not like taking a particular course of study over the years at school. In such courses you learn concepts and develop ones skills at them in succession and they build on one another in a linear fashion. This will not work as well with personal and spiritual growth.
Of course, some basic or foundation concepts are both helpful, needed and do build on one another, which is why I present them in a linear fashion. At the same time, as your awareness of and understanding grows you will find yourself revisiting areas or topics you have already covered as the concepts also support each other. Hence, while I have tried to present them in an ordered fashion there really is no is no prescription or ordered set of steps that will work for everyone.
Everyone has different skills, nature, beliefs, priorities and so on. Further, due to the great number of thoughts we hold and the relationships between them each of us weave our own unique mental tapestry. We may share what appear to the same or similar challenges; however, due to our uniqueness what gives rise to them and how we go about resolving them can be vastly different. This makes how each of us go about our growth, be it personal or spiritual, is inherently a personal one. Fortunately, they are not separate steps. A necessary element of spiritual growth is continued personal growth and personal growth is the gateway to spiritual growth.
There is a curriculum on the site though given our uniqueness it more demonstrative than prescriptive. You will find the essays are more of the "how and why" type rather than the "what to do" kind. They are based on my over fifty years of experiences and exploration of life and actively working on my own personal and spiritual growth. The intent behind them is to provide resources in the form of concepts, self exploration tools and examples of both in action for people to consider and then apply in their own lives in a manner that works them. And, as with any journey, it starts at the beginning...
The first step in any journey having the desire to do it, without this progress is greatly limited. And the first step of any change or movement in our lives is to have a direction, a goal, without it progress is more challenging. No, this is not a contradiction; it is a bit of word play. The first step is in having or finding both of these qualities so we actually move forward and do so in a direction of our choosing.
Without the desire to do something we will remain stationary, and without a goal we are aimless. Applying this to our growth … we can see that we need to want to change and have some idea of what this means. The more defined our goal the better though we need to also realize that as we learn our goal(s) can shift. The question is what do we need to get us there. We will explore intent and desire in one of the early essays early in the journey.
On your journey through the material on this site you will also find the content to be based on a number of premises. Some core ones are that there is order to the non-physical or, as some call it, spiritual aspect of “the Cosmos”, that we are a consciousness and not our mind or the thought constructs within it and that our "true self" (our higher consciousness/self) is evolving even as we are evolving in the physical world/phenomenal reality.
We know that physical matter has evolved since that explosive birth scientists refer to as the Big Bang. Matter has evolved from hydrogen to the denser matter that is scattered throughout the manifest universe. Now, if you believe in an inner consciousness/self or perhaps use the term soul or a conscious universe, is it so hard to believe that consciousness evolves too or that there are laws that govern consciousness just as there are the laws of physics, or chemistry?
Just as understanding of the physical laws helps us create all of the wondrous things we do having even a basic understanding of the laws/rules that govern consciousness helps us work on and improve ourselves.
Certainly, the laws of physics are far easier to discern than those of consciousness as consciousness itself is beyond the range of our instruments or even our mind to detect. One can become consciously aware of them and our true self; however, it takes a great deal of effort over lifetimes to access it. However, the idea that we cannot measure it or share our personal experiences with it directly with others does not mean it does not exist and cannot be examined. The challenge with the “laws of consciousness” is in trying to figure out what they are, to understand them, their impact on us and how to take advantage of them.
Believing that there is far more to us than our bodies, emotions and mind, or at least that it is possible there is, is incredibly helpful. We all know from our experiences how our beliefs can enable or limit us. One of the most limiting is the seeing ourselves as "things". When we start to step beyond mundane reality we begin to change our perception of reality and ability to work with it.
Just as our collective knowledge of physics grows, so does our understanding of consciousness and awareness. It is this understanding that helps us to grow, find more balance in our lives and even reawaken "aspects of self" we have allowed to atrophy or have never activated or accessed before. My personal experiences and those of the many I have worked with and assisted over the years have shown that when we start to work on our personal and spiritual growth we find more balance, and become more in tune with the Cosmos. The Cosmos responds in kind. If we direct our activities appropriately, we will find what we get what we need along the way rather than what we think we need for they are often not the same thing.
We show our intent through our actions, and our actions include our thoughts and our feelings. Yes, every journey has challenges along the way. The purpose of this site is to help you develop a better understanding of the yourself and the Cosmos of which you are apart making you better able to deal with them. It is also important to bear in mind that the content here is not intended to be a sole source of assistance on personal and spiritual growth journey. See it as a supplement to what you have been doing already.
