Exercise 6
Clearing Our Energy Field
Purpose
The purpose of this exercise is to give you some experience in clearing energy, in this case that of one’s own energy field. This act should be part of any meditative process one uses in one form or another. We will do a clearing of our own energy field or aura in this exercise, though it is possible to clear energy from objects or places as well.
In the discussion below, we discuss clearing in general and then personal energy clearing specifically. The clearing of objects or places will be a separate exercise. I highly recommend you do not try to do this until you have developed the skills to do so with yourself. It is one thing to do something that only affects yourself and quite another when it can affect others.

Background
For this exercise, there are several important points we need to understand clearly and without ambiguity before starting. First, while the background material looks at energy clearing in general, the exercise is on clearing our personal energy field. There will be a separate exercise on clearing energy external to us. Second, and more importantly, we can talk about energy without much concern as we are discussing ideas and thoughts that tend to manifest little unless one is quite powerful. However, when we shift to actually working with energy we must take great care for the karmic consequences of misusing our awareness can be severe.
I say this not to scare you rather to make you aware that working with energy is not something one does casually, on a whim or based on unbalancing thoughts such as need. Even when we may “need” to do something, say to clear negative energies in our home or within our person, when we actually set about working with energy we must make sure needs and wants are not the motive force behind our actions.
To be perfectly clear, when we work with energy, our awareness of the consequences of the choice we make by doing so is critical. So that you understand what I mean we will start with key fundamental considerations one must have when working with energies that are not part of us. You may be able to pay your bills late and get away with perhaps a small interest charge, or a friend may let you off the hook for something you have done, the laws of the Cosmos are not forgiving. They care not whether you like, want or even understood the consequences of the choices you make. Again, I am not trying to scare you, just to help you to realize that once you start to work with energy you are no longer the passive participant in the dance of life.
When one works with energy, especially energy not part of one’s own aura, what must be taking into account are:
- Intent must be clear and unambiguous
The point is critical. We do not set about doing energy work with vague notions about what we intend to do. If you do not have clear intent on what you plan to do, do not start. I cannot be more direct. If we have not articulated our intent then we have no “point” on which to focus our attention when we actually do the work. This not only renders our actions futile, we will also be directing our attention, hence energy in all kinds of directions with no idea what they are.
- Any work done is done with the best interests of all in mind
This point, and the next, should be obvious and well known to you already. In regards to them, one must know that there are karmic consequences to all acts based on personal volition. We do not benefit when our acts come at the expense of others or when we are acting out of petty self-interest or for selfish reasons. This includes all our thoughts, conscious or otherwise. We must examine our intent and all thoughts connected to it. We should have this thought firmly in mind when not only in working with energy; we should do so at all times. One should work to eliminate any thoughts that suggest we can benefit at the expense of others. If you believe this is the case, I suggest you may be looking at only side of the ledger.
Certainly, for some energy work this is of less concern; however, if we do not do it all the time we run the risk of missing it some of the time. Do not base the choice of not checking your intent on the idea that you do not need to because you never make a mistake, it is likely you will. Ignorance is not an excuse and does not absolve us, in any way from the consequences of our actions.
We can lie to others and we can hide our thoughts from others, but we cannot hide them from the Cosmos by not sharing them aloud or acting on them. We cannot avoid the reality that as soon as we have a thought it manifests energy. There is no way to bypass this process. Once we manifest energy, we cannot take it back; that is, one cannot do it over again to mitigate the consequences of a choice. This is a consideration I must have even in writing on this topic, given that I will be sharing it with others. I am not immune from the reality that, should people misuse what I am sharing, there are potential consequences to me based on my making that choice.
- We must be focused and have our attention on the task at hand
We have touched on the importance of focus and attention when working with energy. If we do not focus, we cannot expect results as we are directing our energies in multiple directions. The power of a thought, the strength of the energies it manifests, is dependent on our attention to it. We improve our attention by reducing the amount of non-conscious thoughts we have. Yes, we have thousands of thoughts every second, most of these at the non-conscious level; however, that does not mean that we are not able to reduce the number significantly. You might even think this is not possible; however, we have allowed our non-conscious mind to do so much on our behalf. This is why I have focused on working through issues and beliefs as they take up a significant portion of our conscious and non-conscious attention.
- We must prevent unbalanced emotions or thoughts from affecting our work
The reason we want to avoid unbalanced thoughts or emotions when doing energy work should be obvious. Even when focused on a task, our background thoughts and emotions remain active unless we worked to quiet them. If we are working with energy when we are angry, hurt or frustrated these unbalanced thoughts affect the energy, our attention and focus of course and create secondary vibrations of the lower emotional type that increase our burden, not lighten it. Further, such thoughts can redirect the energies we manifest towards unintended targets.
- We must not interfere with another consciousness’s energy
When we are working with energy, intent, focus and attention are important. At the same time, it is critical that we understand that we are not to interfere with the energy of any living thing; doing so without permission has consequences to them and us. Nor can someone resolve us of responsibility by giving us permission to work with his or her energy. Karma is the result of all volition such as ego based or selfish intentions, even non-conscious ones. Nor does the fact that the inexperienced mind is unlikely to do much to harm another absolve us from the consequences. There are actions and consequences, and we cannot circumvent the laws of the Cosmos.
The bottom line is we must not direct or push energies on another without permission. Even when we do have their permission, we must have their highest interests in mind and refrain from manipulating or attempting to manipulate their energy due to ego-based thoughts.
- We must be able to understand and deal with all secondary considerations
There can be unintended consequences when we work with energy. Say, for example, we are clearing the energy in our home at a time when others are there. The clearing of the energy can affect them even if we are meticulous in that we did not touch or interfere with them in any way. This is because when we clear the energy we change the energy around them and they may react to it. I mention this not to deter you, rather so you are mindful. Their reaction to the change in energy would not be your “fault”, so long as you did not manipulate their energy or do so with improper intent and you did not use energy of the wrong kind. We will cover this in the exercise. As a result, when we work with energy, our minds must be clear and we must have thought about what we are about to do and any potential outcomes beforehand, not during or after.
Now that you are aware of what we must consider at all times when we work with energy, we can in a little more detail about clearing energy. In this exercise, we will be doing some basic energy clearing. Obvious question would include:
- Where does the energy we are clearing come from?
- How do I find it?
- How do I remove it?
As we have touched on, our thoughts manifest energy. The energy we manifest is not part of us; we manifest it out of the “background energy” that exists everywhere on all levels simultaneously. The type of energy depends on the level of the thought that gave rise to it. For the most part, depending on how much we may be directing it elsewhere by our thoughts, the energy we manifest remains in or around us. It is not part of our aura though it can stay around and if it persists, will influence it.
Energies can also come from others who leave it behind as well. Energy collects with energies of like kinds so if we have a pocket of negative energies in us or our home it can attract like energies that are nearby.
Often, we call such energies elementals, which are unassociated energy “empowered” by the energy of our thoughts. It really does not matter what you call these energies, once empowered they take on a life of their own.
They are not part of our aura so they either return to their original state, hang around us or we leave them behind. When fully grounded, these energies drain away; however, we are rarely so well grounded, hence, we leave some behind as debris and some remains around us, as mentioned. In this exercise, our focus will be on clearing these ungrounded energies.
Imagine if you will, that the energy is like dust, and as we go about our lives the dust falls away. Energies find energies of kind and tend to collect which coincidentally increases their “shelf-life”.
Within our homes, for example, we find these energies in the corners and tucked away where we tend not to go. Energies can also come from others who leave it behind as well. Energy tends to collect in particular areas within our aura as well, though not necessarily based on physical locations. This is because the energy has an affinity for vibrations of like kind. In our home, for examples, it will collect in places of least resistance. These will be in the corners, behind things and in places where there is a lack of other types of vibrations.
In terms of our bodies, they collect in different areas if there is a commonality. In addition, these lower energies can build up and even plug up our chakras slowing the flow of and the level and type of energy “moving” through them.
We are all able to sense the energy of the vibrations around us. Our conscious awareness of them is dependent on our sensitivity and attention. As people go about their day they are generally absorbed in thought. They may notice their feelings; however, they are generally unaware of the source. People will even walk around an area of low energy, even though the path may be shorter, without even considering why and often without noticing.
We locate places with an accumulation of negative or lower vibrations by simply paying more attention. We use our conscious awareness to direct our attention around us and observe. When we sense something, we then explore it to find out what it is.
Granted, perceiving energies such as these requires a certain amount of sensitivity or at the very least openness, to be effective. This does not mean one cannot remove such energies without this sensitivity, though one would have no way of knowing if the clearing was effective. Yet, one must start somewhere and this is a good exercise to do at the beginning of every meditation, certainly once a week at least.
We do not develop sensitivity by waiting for it; just consider this question, “if I have not done so to this point, is it likely I will without trying a new approach? The new approach is to create and empower enabling thought forms and work to reduce restrictive ones through practice and effort.
It can take time to open up to accepting that everything is made up of energy, that it is all around and within us, and that we are able to “sense” it in great detail. Therefore, if you have difficulty in sensing energy, the place to start is with the thoughts you have as one either lacks beliefs about this whole area or has beliefs that block the idea from being accepted. Reexamine your beliefs using the exercise What Do I Believe, and target beliefs related to your perception and the nature of the world around you.
In no small part, the intent of this exercise, like the preceding ones on meditation and grounding, and some of the others that follow, is to give you practice so as to develop your sensitivity. Be patient with yourself.
Now, once we find a pocket of energy, we can modify or ground the energy away, we do not move it as this allows the negative energy to continue. Further, if one can move it then they can ground it, which is what we should do as it removes the energy.
At this point, it is time to come to an understanding about what clearing energy means. When I use the term clearing energy, I am referring to the removal of particular types of energy by conversion and ground, and not by moving them to another location. Further, I am referring to loose or free energies not those associated with another consciousness.
By associated energy, I mean specifically those vibrations that are part of another consciousness’s, their aura or connections with others. The same rules apply whether we are clearing our aura of lower vibrations or our home. We have touched on this before so you should understand why we ought not to do this.
One last point to remember is that clearing does not remove all the negative energies within their aura. It can remove all loose unassociated energies; however, it will not clear the thoughts that gave rise to them nor block external negative energies.
For obvious reasons, you should have recently read or be familiar with the discussion in the essay on Clearing and Centering before doing this exercise. When you do begin this exercise, do so with the intent to follow through with it. If this is new to you do not be concerned about the outcome, just going through the exercise will help you. Also, remember the following:
- Set aside ample time so you are not rushed.
- Do this exercise during meditation.
- Think as little as possible.
- “Be” as much as you are able.
- Try not to get sidetracked.
Method
You can do the exercise any time or anywhere, even outside of meditation; however, unless one is experienced in clearing energy, it is best to start by doing it during your meditation. Clearing our energy of the lower vibrations we manifest does not remove the thought forms that gave rise to them; however, when you clear these energies you can tag them (make note of their vibratory signature if you will) allowing you to work on the source thought(s) later. Perform this type of work during meditation, where you are in a good space to perceive and work on the thought forms that gave rise to them.
The way we clear our aura of negative vibrations is by using the power of our thoughts. While I cannot give you a definitive visualization for this, as we all have our own thoughts around various mental images, I can explain the process and the kinds of thoughts you need to have to clear your energy.
Essentially, we clear energies from our aura by going through it in a systematic fashion to first notice and then to modify, drain or remove all the negative vibrations we perceive regardless of their source. We should not start the process of clearing our energy unless we are well grounded. For one, it is harder to clear the energy if it has no place to go, and two, you do not want to dump the energy you are clearing around you or onto someone else as this will happen if you are not grounded.
Part I – Preparation
1. Get into the right posture
Do the first six steps of the meditation exercise which is to the point where you have a good rhythm going with your breathing and you are relaxed and calm.
2. Grounding
You start the act of clearing your energy only after you have grounded yourself; therefore do the grounding exercise to make sure that you have a good connection to move energy down and into the earth. This is where much of the energy you clear will go. If you do not have an adequate ground, the likelihood is that you will either not move the energy out of your aura, or you will move it into the area around you.
The process for clearing is essentially the use of will to direct energies perceived as neutral or enriching through every part of the aura or a location and in doing so convert, push or move any lower vibrations down into the earth. By doing this we are “letting go” of vibrations that are negative, that is harmful or restrictive. Doing so also tends to reduce or eliminate many negative thoughts in the process
3. Visualize Your Energy Field
Once you are relaxed and well grounded, you begin to get a mental picture of your energy field. We do not need a detailed picture of our energy field; an impression of it will suffice. By this, I mean one can feel their field and goes by this feel of it rather than a picture; however, most cannot do this, certainly not at first. The size of one’s energy field can vary so one thing you need to do is make sure your image of your energy field is encompassing. When you do this, indeed, anytime you work with energy the trick is not to think about it to much, you must feel it. This is not something I can explain in words, for there is no language to explain it.
When you first start doing this, visualize a bubble around you, big enough to encompass your aura. Just ensure that in your mind’s eye it is big enough to do this. One technique to check is to ask ourselves if it is big enough. If you are uncertain make it a little bigger, but do not be carried away with the size of it. Just make sure you do not visualize yourself as your body unless it is a luminous one with no discernable surface to it nor the energy as a physical thing. We are working with energy, not “things”.
4. Set up the Clearing Energy
The energy one uses to clear the lower vibrations out of their aura is important in that one wants to be using energy that will change or move them. One can use energy manifested by their own thoughts, energy from a higher source or a combination of both. The method shared through this exercise will be one where we are using energy manifested by our own thoughts. The issue is not that one way is necessarily more effective than another is, it is whether one has developed the awareness and sensitivity to start using other energies. We will not be covering this here.
When one is first starting to clear energy, it is best to keep it simple and image the energy you will use to do this as pure, neutral and strong. Not all energies are useful for clearing. One can use this technique with other energies for other purposes; remember, your purpose in this exercise is to clear energy, so the energy used must be able to do this. For example, healing energies are beneficial though not for clearing. Such energies should be reserved for healing, and are not effective for removing or eliminating energies.
So, firmly visualize the energy you want to use. I tend to use pure white, luminous energy that has no gaps, spaces or voids within it, and which is unyielding and balanced. I imagine or feel this energy is above my energy field and will bring this down through my aura. You can picture any colour or feel of energy you like so long as it has the aforementioned qualities to it.
Your intent will form the basis of the energy, so make sure you have the thought that the energy is only to remove lower or negative energies and not touch what could be harmful to you in the long term. When you are clearing physical spaces, like a room or your home, you must extend this to all living things within the area to be cleared. You must not interfere with others without permission even if you do not explicitly know what you are doing. I do not say this to scare you, only to remind you of your responsibilities.
5. Clearing Your Aura
The actual process for clearing one’s energy is simple. All we want to do is draw the energy we have set up down through our aura. We do this slowly and methodically unless you are quite skilled at it, and do so with our attention firmly on our aura. This is the aspect that requires sensitivity, which even if you do not have it will be developed by repeating this exercise when you meditate.
What you do is start to draw this energy down through your aura by imagining or feeling it. You need to pay strict attention to how you feel as you bring it down. You do not want to rush it either as this is a sure way to not clear the energies you think you are.
As you start to draw it down, focus attention on whether the energy feels like it moves easily or is meeting resistance. In the later case, then you have likely encountered negative energies, though you may have missed some even if it felt like it moved easily. Try to get a feel for what it is that is blocking the energy, not the source rather the type of energy. Negative energies can take many forms, as was covered in the essay on Energy Linkages. For example, it can appear as loose and wispy, thick like goo or hard like a rock.
It may help to think about it and visualize the energy that is blocking you. It could be that the energy is resisting, when this happens it is generally for two reasons. Either we are unwilling to let the energy go for various reasons, or it has associations with active thoughts we have currently have at either the conscious or non-conscious level. In this case, you must force the energy down, and facilitate this by imagining the energy you are using to clear as overpowering the negative energy.
Use your will to move the energy. If you cannot seem to move it then you may have blocking thoughts that inhibit your ability to do so. Thoughts such as “this is nonsense”, “I don’t believe it will work” or “the energy is too strong to deal with” are common. We have talked about working on these before, hence, if they are there and preventing you from continuing then you have two choices. Give up or do as I have suggested throughout this material. A belief is a thought and it only controls us if we allow it. If you are unable to move the energy do not let this stop you from using the opportunity. I suggest that you take the time, since you are already in a meditative posture, to work on the blocking issue now rather than give up and get up. There is a reason why you cannot get past this point and you have the energy manifest by the issue right there, in the energy that will not budge. Try to explore it, put the feeling of it into words.
Even if you are successful in eliminating or moving the energy through your ground this will not stop it from returning when you are done, unless you have also eliminated its source whether internal or not. At the same time, at least you will be free or relatively free of it for a time.
One thing that can help is to feel the lower edge of the energy you are drawing down as a flat plan or line through your aura. The line marks the progress of your work. Now see or feel this line (or plane) moving down through your aura from the top of your energy field just above your head to the bottom, below your feet.
As you draw the energy down you can either “burn” the negative energy away or push it down. This is the reason for grounding ourselves when we do this. The energy we move needs somewhere to go so we are not merely moving it around. That will not stop us from manifesting more based on our thoughts, but it will give us some time without what we already manifested. It can be helpful to image that the energy drawn down zaps any negative energy like a bug zapper or a laser beam.
There is no set way to clear the energy, feel free to use your imagination subject to what I have mentioned. Regardless of the image you use you must make sure of the following:
- You are not interfering in others energy.
- You are not messing with your own energy outside of the energy you are clearing.
- Your method ensures that you are clearing every part of your energy field.
- All energy cleared is either transmuted or grounding away.
Continue to draw the energy down through your aura. Monitor whether you encounter resistance and each time you do so repeat the above process. The process goes significantly quicker once you get the feel for it. If you have developed sufficient attention, you can do this when active.
6. After Clearing
Once you have completed clearing you energy you can continue with the meditation, do some energy or sensitivity work, work on an issue or return to a normal state. The first times I would recommend that you take the time to enjoy being relaxed and at peace, certainly relative to normal. Allow yourself to bath in the warm feelings you have, being in a balanced state is very enriching.
We will, in future exercises, look at some of the things we can do from this balanced meditative posture. The relative freedom from our ego driven waking consciousness makes it an idea state to locate, examine, work on and resolve the misaligned thoughts that manifest our lower emotional reactions.
If you are going to work on some things make sure to follow this with the centering process (refer to the Exercise on Centering). Being grounded and clear of lower vibrations will make that process much easier and quicker. In any event, when you are ready to return to waking consciousness, do the Returning to Waking Consciousness step (Part III), as covered in the meditation exercise.
Follow-Up
When you are done, you should feel very free and energized. Even if you just started to meditate you should still notice a difference in how you feel. Do not dwell on the process any longer. It is very possible you will not notice a great deal of difference until you have done it a few times. Be patient with yourself.
You can use this method anytime you need to, especially if you have had some trying times or where strong emotional energies have been active. I recommend that one try to do it regularly. If you meditate daily, add it into your routine. There are many ways to clear ones energy. I provide this exercise as an example. The concepts are important, the method less so and though it works, it is certainly not the only method that does.
A number of traditional meditation methods I have encountered include a process similar to clearing. I cannot speak to their effectiveness in general; however, the same concepts and principles I have touched on here would apply. If you feel your meditation does not accomplish the same thing that this one does I am sure you can find a way to add in any missing elements.
Let your imagination have some freedom with this exercise. You understand the principles and the factors that affect how effective you are. This is far more valuable than the actual process. When you get the hang of it, you will find that you can ground and clear a significant portion of the lower energies you have accumulated or are creating in under a minute. This can be very helpful should you find yourself needing to during the day.
